How to Set Up and Fill Your H2O Boxing Bag at Home

The Punch Equipment H2O Boxing Bag is one of the best pieces of training equipment you can add to a home gym — but getting the setup right matters. Fill it wrong and you’ll either get an underperforming bag or risk a leak. Follow this step-by-step guide and you’ll be hitting it within the hour.

What You’ll Need

Step 1: Choose Your Mounting Point

The H2O bag is heavier than a traditional bag once filled — the 22" model weighs up to 65 kg. This means your mounting point must be solid:

  • Ceiling joist or beam — locate using a stud finder. Never mount into plasterboard alone.
  • Steel beam or exposed rafter — ideal. Use a rated eye bolt appropriate for the bag weight.
  • Dedicated bag bracket — if you’re retrofitting a garage, a wall-to-ceiling arm bracket gives flexibility without core drilling.

Tip: The mounting hardware must be rated to at least 2x the filled bag weight to account for dynamic load (the force of strikes).

Step 2: Attach the Hanging Chain

Thread the H2O Bag Hanging Chain through the bag’s top loop. The commercial-grade chain is designed to handle the load and won’t weaken or deform over time the way lighter chains can. Attach a swivel hook above the chain to allow the bag to rotate freely on impact — this extends the life of your mount and reduces wall stress.

Step 3: Hang the Empty Bag First

Always hang the bag before filling. An empty H2O bag is manageable — a filled one is not. Check the hang height: the centre of the bag should sit at approximately chest to shoulder height for most users. Adjust the chain length as needed.

Step 4: Fill the Bag

Locate the fill valve at the top of the bag. It’s a push-in nozzle — press and hold to open, release to seal.

  1. Insert a hose nozzle or funnel into the fill valve
  2. Fill slowly to avoid air pockets
  3. For the 15" / 35 kg bag: fill to approximately 30–32 litres
  4. For the 18" / 50 kg bag: fill to approximately 45–47 litres
  5. For the 22" / 65 kg bag: fill to approximately 60–62 litres
  6. Leave a small air gap (10–15%) at the top — this allows the water to shift and gives the bag its natural feel

Important: Overfilling removes the air pocket that gives the H2O bag its famous shock-absorbing feel. If the bag feels rock-hard, release a little water.

Step 5: Seal and Test

Press the fill valve firmly to ensure a clean seal. Run your hand around the valve and seams to check for moisture. Give the bag a few light strikes — it should sway naturally and return slowly. Adjust the water level if it feels too rigid or too soft.

Maintenance Tips

  • Check water level every 3–6 months — bags can lose small amounts via the valve over time
  • If training outdoors, UV exposure can affect the bag shell — store undercover when not in use
  • Wipe down the exterior after sessions to extend the shell life
  • Inspect the hanging chain and swivel hook every 6 months for wear
